How To Find The Right Sunglasses For Your Face Shape

As a stylist, one question I get over and over is, “Can you help me find sunglasses that fit my face?” So, for Throwback Thursday I wanted to republish this post on how to find the right sunglasses for your face shape.

Does this scenario sound familiar? You try on every pair of sunglasses in the store while shopping with a girlfriend. You finally think you have something that works, so you look over at your friend for her approval. She shakes her head sadly, and it’s back to the beginning. It can be soooo hard to get great looking sunglasses, so I thought I’d dedicate a post to how to find the right sunglasses for your face shape.

There are five different face shapes: oval, round, heart, square and long. To figure out what the shape of your face is, do the following:

  1. Get all the hair out of your face
  2. Stand in front of a mirror
  3. Draw an outline of your face in lipstick on the mirror
  4. Stand back and look at the shape on the mirror

Once you know the shape of your face, you can figure out which sunglasses are right for you with the tips below.

Oval
Shape: Your face is slightly longer than it is round
Who: Megan Fox

Optical How-to: Most shapes of glasses suit you. They should be as wide as, or slightly wider than, the widest part of your face.

These aviators look great on Megan because they are the right size for her face, and they come out just past the temples.

Round
Shape: Your face is rounded and as wide as it is long
Who: Emma Stone

Optical How-to: Square or rectangular frames will balance a full face. Frames that are slightly wider than your face will make it seem smaller. Avoid round shapes.

The square angles of these classic Risky Business Ray-Bans are perfect for Emma’s round face.

Heart
Shape: You have a wide forehead and a small chin
Who: Jennifer Love Hewitt

Optical How-to: Your glasses should not be much wider than your temples. Subtle frames will balance your small chin. Don’t go too big with your sunglasses or you will overemphasize your strong forehead.

These subtle frames don’t draw too much attention to Jennifer’s forehead, so they balance her narrow chin nicely.

Square
Shape: You have a wide forehead and a prominent, square jaw
Who: Keira Knightly

Optical How-to: Glasses should be rounded or oval to balance the angularity of your face.

These rounded sunglasses perfectly balance Keira’s angular face.

Long
Shape: Your face is thin and a good bit longer than wide
Who: Sarah Jessica Parker

Optical How-to: Square or rectangular glasses with strong frames will minimize the length of your face.

These sunglasses look great on SJP. They are slightly squared and a good size to balance her long face.
