Winter Tips for Hair and Skin

Winter, love it or hate it, can do a number on your skin and hair. I feel like I am barely recognizable by the time March hits! I’ve learned a few winter tips for hair and skin over the years though and hope you’ll get as much use out of them as I do.

Hair:

  • Keeping hair shiny and smooth with icy temperatures and punishing winds can be hard, so I use a hair mask once a week. Before I go to sleep, I’ll wet my hair and put the mask on, pile my hair in a bun and go to sleep (put a towel on top of your pillow so you don’t get conditioner everywhere). When I shower the next morning, my hair is silky smooth. If you can’t get a good night’s sleep while lubed up, leave the conditioner in for an hour while you clean, organize or bop around your social media networks. Then rinse. I really like this mask from Salon Grafix. The price is great ($6.99 for 6 oz.) and I love the citrus smell. You can find it at drugstore.com, CVS, Walgreens and other retailers.

  • If you can’t be bothered to deep condition, try TRESemme Split Remedy. It really does a great job of getting rid of those split ends. Find it at drugstore.com for $5.69 for 25 oz. or at your local supermarket or drugstore.

  • If you love wearing hats, but hate how it flattens your hair, here’s a good tip. Put your hair in a high ponytail before you put your hat on. When you take it off, undo the ponytail and your hair will still have lots of body.
  • My hair can get very static-y in winter. I carry a sheet of fabric softener in my makeup bag (really!). When my hair has too much static, I’ll rub the sheet over my hair and the staic is gone. I know that sounds weird, but it works!

Face:

  • I’ve mentioned Clinage skincare in a post before here, but I need to mention it again because it has really changed my skin, and I have gotten a lot of compliments since I started using it. You can find it at clinage.com. The Vitamin C Home Peel Kit is $125, but you can also call the number on the website to talk to someone about which products would be best for you.

Hands:

  • I buy a few pairs of cheap gloves at H & M or Target every fall. When I go outside, I’ll slather a thick layer of cream on and put the gloves over it. My hands are soft and hydrated whenever I get to my destination.
  • I use Vaseline lip balm from a tube on my cuticles to keep them from getting ragged. I squeeze it on, just on my cuticles, and they stay nice and moist.

Feet:

  • I’ve mentioned this tip before, but it’s a good one! I slather a thick layer of cream on my feet and wear socks to bed. If you don’t like sleeping with socks (I don’t), buy some cheap socks and cut the toes off. Your feet will feel free, but will be soft the next day. I use Pacifica Body Butter in Tahitian Gardenia on my hands, body and feet. It’s very rich and smells fabulous. You can find it at pacificaperfume.com for $15 for an 8 oz. tube. If you don’t like gardenia, there are 13 other scents to choose from!

Clothes:

  • If your down jacket is machine washable, don’t just hang it up to dry. Put it in the dryer with two or three tennis balls, and dry it on low for about 10-20 minutes. The tennis balls plump up the feathers again so the jacket will look like new (warning: it is kind of noisy!).

  1. These tips are great! With our cold weather going on I will be putting them into action especailly with the pony tail hat trick! and the sock tip luv it:)

  2. Two more tips for static in your hair in the winter:

    – Comb it out with a metal comb.
    – Spray your hair with “Static Guard”

For face and hands: Try “Vaseline Petroleum Jelly Cream Creamy Formula” on your face and/or hands. It comes in a tube. I buy it at Target.
